One of the most magical things about holidaying on the Coffs Coast is the incredible wildlife that calls this region home. From kangaroos grazing by the sea to dolphins surfing the waves, every day is an opportunity to connect with nature in a way that feels truly special. Whether you’re staying at BIG4 Park Beach, BIG4 Sawtell Beach, Woolgoolga Beach, or Woolgoolga Lakeside, you’re never far from unforgettable encounters with our local wildlife.

Kangaroos at Woolgoolga

No trip to Woolgoolga is complete without spotting kangaroos lounging on the grassy headlands or bounding along the beach. A favourite spot is Look At Me Now Headland at Emerald Beach, where mobs of kangaroos are often seen grazing with a backdrop of sweeping coastal views. It’s a peaceful, iconic Australian scene that our guests love.

Whales on the Move

From May to November, the Coffs Coast becomes part of the famous humpback whale highway. These gentle giants migrate along the coast, breaching, tail-slapping, and putting on incredible shows for onlookers. Popular vantage points include Muttonbird Island, Woolgoolga Headland, and Bonville Headland at Sawtell. Or, for an even closer experience, you can join a whale-watching tour with local operators out of the Coffs Harbour Marina.

Dolphins, Turtles & Marine Life

Keep your eyes on the surf, dolphins are regulars along Park Beach, Sawtell, and Woolgoolga, often riding the waves just metres from swimmers and surfers. If you’re lucky, you might also spot sea turtles or even rays gliding through the shallows of our creeks and estuaries.

Birdwatcher’s Paradise

The Coffs Coast is a haven for birdlife, with countless species found across our wetlands, creeks, and bushland. From pelicans and sea eagles soaring overhead to colourful lorikeets in the treetops, you’ll find plenty to admire on your walks. For a truly special experience, take a stroll along the Solitary Islands Coastal Walk, where native bird calls provide the perfect soundtrack to the ocean views.

Headlands, Walks & Lookouts

Nature trails and headland lookouts offer the best chance to enjoy both the scenery and the wildlife. Some must-visit spots include:

  • Look At Me Now Headland (Emerald Beach): Kangaroos and ocean views.

  • Muttonbird Island (Coffs Harbour): Home to a colony of wedge-tailed shearwaters (muttonbirds) and stunning whale-watching views.

  • Bonville Headland (Sawtell): Perfect for sunset picnics and whale spotting.

  • Woolgoolga Headland: One of the region’s top vantage points for both whales and dolphins.
